CREATING A LEARNING NETWORK
In order to create a superior education for yourself you must find ways to interact with people and the world, whether it is the development of mentors in your interest areas or finding others to meet, study and interact with both online and in person. The world we live in requires as much social intelligence as it does mental intelligence.
Gratis University is developing a data base of students both in your subject areas of interests and in your regional area. This network opens up the possibilities of creating collaborative projects, businesses, learning opportunities and other exciting ventures. In the meantime you will need to be more creative in finding people. The internet offers ways to connect with others, but we encourage you to find people resources in your local community. If you live near a college or university it is often possible to find study groups to join or people to connect with around shared studies and interests. Gifted high school students are often interested in doing projects outside the walls of their schools. Retirees or people currently working sometimes will make time for passionate learners in their field. Work internships can often be negotiated. You are also welcome to consult with us for ideas. On Getting a Mentor:

the singular best tip I can give you is to find a mentor. While there are people who offer this as a professional service, it tends to be more effective as an informal relationship. The best way to foster this relationship:

Find someone who you want to be like in 10-15 years.

Email her. Tell her that you admire her and ask if she would be willing to chat for 20 minutes. If possible, propose meeting in person. Make it easy for her by offering a variety of options, including meeting at her office.

When you meet, come prepared with broad, open-ended questions about how she became successful. Make sure that she’s doing most of the talking.

Take notes.

After the meeting, send a thank you card.

Follow her advice, even if it doesn’t make sense.

Several months later, update her with your progress. If she responds, ask if it would be possible to get together again.

Rinse and repeat.
The trick is to show her that you sincerely value her time and are following her advice.
